'You are allowed to lie.'

With every chapter we read of 'The Giver' by Lois Lowry, we are gaining more and more insight into Jonas' world and his Community.

Today he read his instructions for becoming the new Receiver of Memory.  His last instruction is simple: 'You may lie.'

What questions or thoughts do you have about lying (in the meaning of 'telling an untruth')?  What do you think of this rule being specified in his instructions?

  1. I think it's very strange but a great thing to have in the book it causes suspense and mystery. I think that the rule of 'being able to lie' is a rule that only Jonas has.

  2. Since his work is very top secret. (He cant even tell his family about it) So he would have to lie to them about it. Also he is not allowed to share dreams, so he would have to lie then as well

    1. He could just say that he wasn't allowed to tell them about it

  3. I think that maybe the committee is allowed to lie to, because they might know what's going on outside too.

  4. I think that if everyone received this instruction, they would all lie about it, for they would think that no one else has received that instruction.

  5. it is very suspicious this book"THE GIVER" jonas is allowed actually is even to allowed to lie to his parent what he was doing in his "SECRET PRACTISE" AWESOME. but i am very suspicious about the girl that "WAS" the reciever before jonas even the community people are not allowed to even speak her name. that is "SCARY."I HOPE THEY TELL SOMETHING ABOUT HER IN THE BOOK AND I WONDER WHAT IS GOING TO HAPPEN IF THE COMMUNITY PEOPLE WILL BE ABLE TO FIGURE OUT IF JONAS WAS LYING OR NOT? LETS SEE WHAT HAPPENS NEXT?

  6. I think now that since Jonas has a very important job, it might be something to do with the community, so to keep the community happy, he might need to lie about what he knows.
